Drinking Water Disinfection

Disinfecting public water supplies is nothing new.  However, with various disinfection technologies, emerging contaminants, and new regulations to consider, choosing the right drinking water disinfection method can be an overwhelming task.

Drinking Water Disinfection Technologies Wall Chart

Disinfection eliminates microbiological substances such as bacteria, viruses, and cysts to protect human health and the environment.  Some methods are more effective than others when targeting specific species and some methods have adverse side-effects such as creating disinfection byproducts and halo acetic acids whose health effects are unknown.  It is generally understood that that no single disinfection technology can meet all the treatment objectives.

Siemens Water Technologies has the unique capability and experience to provide a multi-barrier approach that meets your complete disinfection objectives, maximizing treatment results and minimizing life-cycle costs and risk.  Our experts analyze your treatment objectives, availability of chemicals, energy costs, transportation and labor costs to develop the optimum disinfection solution.

Increased regulatory drivers are requiring better analytical, control and reporting to stay within regulated or permitted limits.  Siemens Water Technologies also provides a wide range of water quality instrumentation for a total-systems solution with complete analysis, control and communication of water quality.

Drinking Water Disinfection Case Study

Alaskan WTP Finds Safer, More Cost-Effective Onsite Alternative to Transporting Chlorine Gas Hundreds of Miles

Golden Heart Utilities (GHU), a subsidiary of Fairbanks Water & Sewer, treats water and wastewater for more than 55,000 people in the greater Fairbanks, Alaska, area.  The water treatment plant is designed to treat 8 million gallons per day (MGD), with an average daily flow of 5 MGD.  Because of its proximity to the river and to downtown Fairbanks, the strict requirements set by the USEPA and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for storing and handling chlorine gas were a constant concern.
