Wastewater Treatment Water Quality Analyzers and Process Control

Compliance with increased regulatory and quality control drivers requires complete solutions for reliable and accurate on-line water quality measurement, coupled with responsive and intelligent controls as well as provision for seamless data communications.

Controlling water quality begins with precise detection and measurement of one or more water quality parameters such as:

§         Chlorine and other chlorine-based chemicals for disinfection

§         Oxidants for precipitation, TOC removal, taste and/or odor control

§         Dechlorination processes for elimination of chlorine

§         Reducing agents for neutralization and minimization of oxidants

§         Acidic and alkaline solutions for pH correction

§         Ion specific analysis as needed for control of water quality

Each application requires the appropriate analytical cell & measurement module and analyzer & controller electronics.

DEOX/2000® residual measurement module with MFC analyzer and controller
An extensive range of Wallace & Tiernan® and Stranco® analyzers and controllers provides a unique solution capability from a single source covering your entire water treatment process.

Analytical Cells and Sensors -
Water quality measurement begins with detection using the analytical sensor. The two basic types of sensors are “bare electrode cell” and “membrane cell”. The important considerations here are reliability, stability and minimized maintenance (cleaning and calibration).

  • For disinfectant measurement, our three-electrode sensor eliminates the need for constant zero-adjustment typical of other sensors. Hydrodynamic grit cleaning of the electrode surfaces maintains sensitivity to extend the intervals between calibrations.
  • For free and total chlorine measurement, or when your water exhibits fluctuating pH, our internally buffered membrane type sensor eliminates the need for separate reagents.
  • While ORP and pH measurement seem simple enough, our Strantrol® ORP and Strantrol® pH measurement technologies are, to this day, without equal in the industry, providing highly accurate and reliable measurement of these critical water quality pameters.

Flow Cells -
These sensors are typically mounted in a specially designed flow cell which permits water quality analysis to be conducted under very controlled conditions for greater accuracy and repeatability. Additionally, the flow cell makes calibration and routine maintenance simple and they can even accommodate multiple sensors.

  • For pH, ORP and other ion-specific measurement applications, our Strantrol® flow cell assembly includes a wall mount transparent flow chamber, pressure gauge, sample valve, flow switch, and a plumbing kit complete with isolation valves mounted in a corrosion-proof, acrylic enclosure.
  • For oxidants and reducing agents, our DEPOLOX® 5 flow cell consists of a 3-electrode system utilizing a bare-electrode design. Up to four water quality analytical sensors can be installed in the compact chamber. A temperature measurement, a flow control device and flow switch are integral components of the flow cell.

Measurement Modules -
For some applications, reagents are required to conduct the water quality analysis. To ensure reliability, stability and minimize maintenance (cleaning and calibration), specially designed measurement modules collect the sample water, meter reagent(s) and perform the measurement under very controlled conditions. These are commonly referred to as “wet chemistry” modules.

  • For free and total chlorine residual, chlorine dioxide, ozone or potassium permanganate residual measurement down to 1 ppb, our Micro/2000® is unmatched in the industry today.
  • For wastewater treatment plant effluent applications, our Deox/2000® ensures complete dechlorination at a level to support compliance with discharge permits. With a “center zero” residual analysis, control to an SO2 set point is achievable.

Analyzers and Controllers -
Pairing measurement modules with analyzers and controllers provide the ultimate in process control and reliability. With the rapidly changing world of instrumentation and control, coupled with increased regulatory reporting requirements, you need to take full advantage of the latest technologies.

  • For simple water quality control applications, our SFC analyzer/controller is a highly flexible measurement and control system. Its versatility includes single water parameter analyzer, proportional controller as well as compound loop control capabilities.
  • More complex water quality control applications are easily addressed with our MFC analyzer/controller. This unit handles up to four water quality parameters and temperature which can be measured by single or multiple flow cells and includes two independent control loops that can be configured for most disinfection control applications. This flexibility provides for an almost limitless combination of continuous measurement technologies for the same sample or different samples from the entire treatment process.
  • For highly accurate pH, ORP or ion-specific analysis and control, our Strantrol® 880 and Strantrol® 890 (chlorination / dechlorination) analyzer/controller boasts an accuracy of + 0.05% per year. The 4-20mA output is accurate to + .02 mA.
  • To take the guesswork out of wastewater chlorination and dechlorination, we have integrated two leading technologies into a single system. The Strantrol 960® Dual Oxidation Control System combines oxidant monitoring and control systems with ORP disinfection and residual management.

Wastewater Treatment Water Quality Analyzers and Process Control Case Study

Strantrol 890 Fine-Tunes Biological Nutrient Removal

The 12.5 MGD Fox River Water Pollution Control Center, built in 1974, is a regional treatment plant for the Upper Illinois Fox River Watershed, serving a portion of Brookfield, Wis., and six other member communities. Expanded in 2000, the facility utilizes the activated sludge process that serves as secondary treatment by breaking down complex organic matter and converting it into a biological mass, which can then be separated from the wastewater and removed. In this process, the plant’s aeration tanks are separated into four stages designed to help achieve biological nutrient removal (BNR) and provide semi-plug flow conditions to reduce short circuiting.
