Drinking Water Treatment – VOC Removal
Drinking water containing high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may be harmful to human health. At high levels of exposure, many VOCs can cause central nervous system depression (drowsiness, stupor).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that VOCs are present in one-fifth of the nation's water supplies. They can enter ground water from a variety of sources. Benzene, for example, may enter ground water from gasoline or oil spills on the ground surface or from leaking underground fuel tanks. Other examples of commonly detected VOCs are dichloromethane (methylene chloride), an industrial solvent; trichloroethylene, used in septic system cleaners; and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene), used in the dry-cleaning industry. Detected in water supplies.

Siemens Water Technologies offers a range of processes to help treatment plants remove harmful VOCs from their water sources:

  • Carbon Adsorption Systems
  • Carbon regeneration and replenishment services
  • Filters and membrane systems
  • And more

Siemens also provides pilot treatment systems and analytical testing to document the efficacy of treatment prior to installation. We also provide parts and service on all of our equipment, as well as equipment which may have been provided by other manufacturers.

Case Study: Delaware Community Solves VOC Contamination in Drinking Water Supply with Activated Carbon
In the Fall of 2005, water analysis for the Town of Millsboro, DE indicated that they were exceeding the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for the volatile organic compound, Trichloroethylene (TCE). TCE has been identified by the EPA as a carcinogen. Siemens Water Technologies supplied two treatment systems, each of which will treat more than 250 gpm of drinking water.  Each system consists of three carbon adsorber vessels that contain Westates Carbon(TM)-brand granular activated carbon.
