Biosolids Treatment - Solids Reduction

Biosolids are the residual solids remaining after water or wastewater has been treated (sometimes referred to as "sludge").  The need for solids reduction is becoming more evident as the volume of generated wastewater solids is growing and many local governments are choosing to dispose of the nutrient-rich solids through burial in landfills or incineration.  Biosolids reduction provides municipalities alternative methods to burial and incineration.

By recycling wastewater solids, communities are helping to save space in landfills and are encouraging the reuse of the naturally nutrient-packed materials. Biosolids contain significant amounts of all nutrients required by plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients, making them an excellent fertilizer for use in agriculture and forestry and soil improver in composting projects.  Adding biosolids to soil can improve water retention, especially during times of drought, help retain nutrients, accelerate plant growth, and potentially reduce storm water runoff and erosion. The biosolids reduction treatment systems provided by Siemens can help municipalities recycle biosolids in the same way that communities are doing.

Our solids reduction technologies have demonstrated proven performance in thousands of municipal and industrial applications.  Each offers its own merits as a stand-alone product, while creating additional synergy of cost-reduction and dewatering effectiveness when integrated into turnkey systems.

Case Study;  Investment in Solids Reduction eliminates routine biological solids wasting

In 1998, a small Georgia community began operating a Sequencing Batch Reactor wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Unique to the 1-mgd facility was the fact it was built without any biological solids handling equipment. Rising costs associated with handling the biosolids from an existing oxidation ditch facility was the motivating force behind the need to curb these costs as early as the design stage.  Because the town was far too familiar with the cost of sludge hauling, tipping fees, labor, and the rising costs of polymers and energy, it was determined to find a solution that would keep these costs to a minimum for their new facility.
