Purifying Water to Power Airports and Cities

Large airports need electricity for everything from the control tower to moving passengers from one terminal to another.  Where does it come from?  Often times, the on-site power generation station such as this one at New York's John F. Kennedy International aiport.  The incoming water to the power plant is city water.  Although pure enough to drink, the water is not suitable for us steam generating systems.  A water treatment step is needed to deliver a higher quality or, purity of water to the system.  In this case, the water treatment system is housed in a mobile semi-trailer.  The water treatment system removes minerals which would cause damage to the power generating equipment.  About once a week, the trailers are removed and replaced with new trailers containing fresh ion exchange vessels that ensure the quality of the water remains consistent and the power production reliable.

Waste Minimization through Cooling Tower Blowdown Recovery

The largest volume of water required by an electric generator typically will be used in the cooling tower.   As the availability and cost associated with  water becomes more limited, water reuse or reclamation have become an attractive solution to augment already stressed  municipal water supplies.  Siemens Water Technologies offers special filtration systems that enable users to recover and reuse the majority of their cooling tower blowdown, while also minimizing the volume of water discharged from the plant.  Large-scale reuse of treated wastewater in cooling towers could potentially save millions of gallons of a community’s potable supply.
