Class "A" Sludge as a Fertilizer

After years of evolution toward the ideal of a totally sustainable, economically sound, environmentally safe, publicly acceptable large-scale waste-to-product cycle, Class "A" sludge has begun to find its place in the fertilizer market.

Mike Wall with prize-winning watermelon

Mike Wall of the Forest City, North Carolina Wastewater Treatment Plant grew this prize winning watermelon in 2005.  When he planted it, he first layed down dried Class "A" sludge produced from the Siemens indirectly heated dryer at their Wastewater Treatment Plant.  The result was this 148-pound watermelon!

Mike took the watermelon to the Rutherford County Fair in North Carolina and won first place.  He then took it to the Cleveland County Fair in North Carolina and won first place again.  Mike has been growing watermelons for five years and won first place in 2004 with an 86-pound watermelon.
