Challenge
A Northeastern manufacturing facility was experiencing severe corrosion in their steam condensate system. It was thought that dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and/or other non-condensable gases were the problem. The challenges faced by plant operating and maintenance personnel were:
- Replacement of corroded parts
- Increased blowdown in boilers to remove accumulated corrosion products
- Reduced heat transfer due to the insulating effect of the corrosion
- Unscheduled downtime for cleaning and replacement of the corroded parts
- The plant manager needed technical assistance and a quick, dependable solution.
Solution
Working with the plant manager, Siemens:
- Conducted a thorough analysis to determine the types and levels of non-condensable gases that were present
- Analyzed the existing water treatment system to determine the extent of corrosion
- Supplied a Permutit® SLH deaerating heater
The Permutit® line of equipment continues to be an important part of the solutions that we can provide. Permutit® SLH deaerating heaters are ideal for all industries, power plants and other facilities where dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide and other non-condensable gases are present.
Results
Non-condensable gases are a common problem faced by a multitude of plants throughout the world. Permutit® SLH deaerating heaters ensure:
- Reduced corrosion in condensate systems
- Maximum efficiency as the water is preheated to near steam temperature
- Minimal steam loss
- Simple, inexpensive installation as the deaerator is furnished complete
- Easy maintenance with fully accessible spray valves
Minimal floor space consumed with unique, compact design
