The BIOPAQ® IC (Internal Circulation) technology is an advanced anaerobic treatment technology that is applicable for the treatment of certain high strength organic wastewaters, and builds upon the design concepts of the UASB.
The BIOPAQ® IC Reactor, unlike the UASB, recovers biogas in two zones not one. In the first zone, located at a midpoint in the reactor height, collected biogas is used to generate a gas lift by which water and sludge are circulated through the reactor. Such circulation serves to mix reactor contents and provide necessary influent dilution resulting in very high organic loading rates, usually in the range 15-30 kg COD/m3.d. The second biogas collection zone, at the top of the reactor, is hydraulically low-loaded, allowing a very efficient separation of biogas, biomass granules and treated effluent.

- Siemens has licensed this technology from Paques
- Siemens has licensing rights for all of the US
- Applications for Siemens are limited to industrial only
- Extremely small footprint due to high applicable loading rate and reactor’s aspect ratio. This allows easy retrofit onto built-up sites
- Biogas is removed from the reactor well ahead of the point where effluent is discharged, providing a quiescent zone and keeping the biomass in the reactor
- Intensely mixed sludge bed as a result of specially designed influent distribution system (and introduction of internally circulated flow), minimizes short-circuiting and provides a stable environment in the sludge bed
- Unique influent distribution system is very unlikely to plug with solids
- No internal moving parts, less maintenance costs
- Quick recovery after toxic spill or overloads, due to the unique mixing principle
- Small system volume simplifies sludge inventory management
