Delaware Community Solves VOC Contamination in Drinking Water Supply with Activated Carbon

Challenge

In the Fall of 2005, water analysis for the Town of Millsboro, DE indicated that they were exceeding the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for the volatile organic compound, Trichloroethylene (TCE).  TCE has been identified by the EPA as a carcinogen.  The town's supply averaged between 70 to 90 parts per million (ppm) of trichloroethylene, which is about 14 times higher than the federal limit of 5 ppb.

Solution

Siemens Water Technologies supplied two treatment systems, each of which will treat more than 250 gpm of drinking water.  Each system consists of three carbon adsorber vessels that contain Westates Carbon(TM)-brand granular activated carbon.

Siemens provided installation of the vessels, interconnecting piping, loading of the activated carbon and startup assistance.

Result

Siemens was able to mobilize the equipment, media and manpower to bring the contaminated drinking water wells back on line within 4 days of notification.  Since Siemens used it's own personnel for start-up, the system was successfully brought on-line and the treated effluent met all state guidelines.
