Wausau, Wisconsin, Doubles Lime Handling Capacity

Challenge

In 1999, the Wausau Water Treatment Plant needed to expand their plant and double the lime handling capacity. The expansion would duplicate an existing hydrated lime system and clarifier, replace one existing clarifier, add several small storage tanks, and modify a number of other smaller chemical feed systems.

Solution

The Wausau Water Treatment Plant again chose Siemens Water Technologies to help with the upgrade.

The hydrated lime system adds lime to remove iron from raw water drawn from underground sources. It consists of a WHM™ Model T-1 system, which includes a storage silo, bin activator feeder, slurry tank, and pump discharge arrangement. It is a fully skirted, self-contained unit delivered to the site ready for easy connection and startup.

The second hydrated lime system is a mirror image of the first.

Result

The original WHM Model T-1system was installed at Wausau in 1994, replacing a pebble lime system and slaker. The pebble lime system was labor intensive, but the hydrated lime system runs automatically and requires far less labor, corresponding with the plant's overall automated approach.
