Temporary Water Treatment System Prevents Construction Delay

Challenge

The Olivehurst development was ready for home construction but the existing municipality did not have adequate capacity to supply the development.  Plans were in place to build a full scale treatment plant, but not in time to accept new homes coming onto the market.  Empire Construction implemented a phased construction plan which included a temporary potable water system.  This would allow for the release of the first phase initial permits of construction to begin.

Solution

When the wells were dug, the water tested high for iron and manganese.  These contaminants must be removed from the water to meet potable drinking water standards.  The customer contacted Siemens Water Technologies, formerly USFilter, for a solution to their water issues.  Siemens developed a unique design for a low cost, quick installation of a manganese removal filter.  Using two 12-foot vessels in parallel to create a 1,000 gpm treatment system, we were able to delay the expense for the permanent treatment plant.  The customer supplied the pumps, backwash holding tanks and chlorination system.

Siemens Water Technologies installed the tanks and internal media, and provided field operator training.  The Olivehurst municipality operated the system while the permanent system was being built.

Results

The customer was able to sell homes in a phased schedule without the risk of limited water resources.  Siemens developed a unique treatment system to remove manganese and iron that was both a low cost and a quick solution for the customer.
