Aeration and Gas Stripping

Ground water supplies commonly contain dissolved gasses and other contaminants which are undesirable in the finished water. Iron may cause taste and odor complaints and foul distribution systems.

Aeration and Gas Stripping

Excess carbon dioxide causes an unstable water and consumes lime in a softening process. Other dissolved gasses such as radon, hydrogen sulfide, methane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a health and safety concern.

Aeration of ground water is the process of transferring oxygen into the water supply. Oxygen addition to an iron bearing water supply causes the iron to be oxidized which converts it from a soluble state to an insoluble precipitate. Once insoluble the iron may be settled or filtered from the water supply. Gas stripping refers to the reduction of unwanted dissolved gasses by spreading the water into a thin film causing the gasses to pass into a counter-current stream of air passed through the stripping tower. Both aeration and gas stripping can occur inside the same treatment unit such that multiple water quality concerns are addressed by a single treatment unit.

Our aerators are used for the removal of dissovled iron, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other dissolved contaminants.

Removal of iron from a groundwater source is a common application for drinking water aeration.  Induced Draft Aerators use a network of PVC slats to create a countercurrent of air and water.  These slats are easily removed and cleaned via a hinged and bolted door on the side of the aerator.  Designs are available up to treat for iron removal up to 5 MGD in a single unit.

Other aerator designs include the ATOMERATOR for pressurized oxidation, the Forced Draft Aerator for VOC removal, and the Cascade Aerator for the removal of iron up to 5 ppm without moving parts.
