Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

Hydrogen sulfide removal in drinking water is not carried out due to a health hazard but because hydrogen sulfide is a common nuisance contaminant whose distinctive "rotten egg" odor makes water treatment desirable.  Siemens provides H2S removal systems for municipalities.

Drinking Water Hydrogen Sulfide Removal
Most methods for treating sulfur water rely on the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide gas into elemental sulfur, a solid. Oxidation is the process by which soluble or dissolved contaminants are converted to soluble byproducts or insoluble products that can be filtered. This process changes the chemical and physical properties of the reactants. Hydrogen sulfide can be oxidized by several methods. If concentrations exceed 6.0 mg/l, chemical oxidation such as chlorination is recommended. If concentrations do not exceed 6.0 mg/l and water pH is above 6.8, an oxidizing filter such as manganese greensand can be used.

Hydrogen Sulfide Removal Case Study

Midas OCM Field Testing Confirms Increased Capacity for H2S Adsorption and Odor Removal

Midas OCM (Odor Control Media) was developed using a special manufacturing process which enabled the media to have increased ability to adsorb H2S when compared with other odor control medias in the current marketplace.  Increased adsorption offers the benefits of longer run lengths, fewer bed replacements and minimal downtime.

This unique and patented process converts H2S directly to elemental sulfur rather than sulfuric acid, which is the typical reaction of H2S on carbon.  Since the sulfur molecule is smaller than the sulfuric molecule, the carbon is able to adsorb a greater number of sulfur molecules.  By comparison, Midas OCM will last between 3 to 8 times linger than conventional medias used for this purpose.
