West Coast Aerospace Manufacturer Signs Agreement to Treat Perchlorate Contamination

Challenge

In June 2002, Siemens Water Technologies commenced a two-year contract with a major manufacturer in the aerospace industry for the remediation of perchlorate. This client repairs and reloads solid rocket motors for the Department of Defense and NASA. During the rebuilding process, older fuel was removed and disposed of using approved methods. Some of the material found its way into the groundwater, ultimately contaminating multiple wells on their industrial site.

Solution

Siemens provided this client with 12 resin service exchange vessels, two sets of 6 vessels in a lead/lag configuration. In addition to supplying and installing the header piping that connects the units, Siemens provides periodic resin exchanges, removing exhausted vessels from the site and replacing them with vessels containing virgin resin. The spent resin is thermally destructed at a waste-to-energy regeneration site.

Results

The client selected Siemens based on the company’s ability to install the system, service it locally, dispose of the spent resin and create a certificate of destruction.
The flexibility of the tank exchange system allowed this customer to receive a treatment system in a short period of time and with minimal capital investment.
