Biopharm Company Installs CDI® System to Improve Quality of USP Purified Water

Challenge

A veterinary pharmaceutical firm in the Midwest upgraded a USP Purified Water system that was not consistently producing water of adequate quality – both conductivity and microbial.  The customer did not want to use chemicals to regenerate ion exchange beds and is located far from any service deionization facilities.

Solution

Siemens installed a new hot water sanitizable continuous deionization (CDI®) system downstream of an existing two pass reverse osmosis unit.

The product water conductivity improved dramatically.
The CDI unit is hot (80 ºC) water sanitizable, improving microbial control.

Results

  • Conductivity averages 0.07 microsiemen/cm
  • TOC averages 11 ppb
  • Microbial counts average 1 CFU/100 ml Down time for sanitization has been dramatically reduced.
  • The system requires less operator attention than before the upgrade.
  • Validation of the changes was quick and easy.
  • The customer was so satisfied that they copied the upgrade design for other systems.
