Softeners Remove Hardness to Protect Downstream Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

      Challenge

A Midwestern company was experiencing frequent cleanings of their reverse osmosis (RO) system due to severe scaling on the membranes.  As is the case with most Midwestern well waters, high levels of calcium and magnesium adversely affect many operations that use this water.  The problems experienced with the RO system:

      • Declining water quality
      • Increased pressure drops, especially in the last stage of the RO system
      • Higher pressures required
      • Frequent cleanings to restore performance
      • Frequent and extensive downtime

The plant manager needed technical assistance and a quick, dependable solution.

      Solution

Working with the plant manager, our personnel:

      • Conducted a thorough water analysis to determine the types and levels of contaminants in the feed water
      • Performed a membrane autopsy to determine overall performance, condition, etc.
      • Met with plant personnel to determine their concerns
      • Supplied a water softener

Siemens Water Technologies softeners are ideal for all industries, institutions and commercial facilities where the incoming water contains hardness.  The softeners are simply installed upstream of the RO system.

      Results

Hardness in water is a common problem faced by a multitude of plants throughout the world.  By using the softeners, the hardness is removed.  Barium, some forms of iron and other metals can also be removed depending upon the type of softener chosen.  Installing a softener prior to a reverse osmosis system ensures:

      • Maximum performance
      • Consistent quality and quantity of water
      • Minimal unscheduled downtimes
      • Protection of downstream equipment
      • Protection of the RO membranes from premature fouling to ensure long life
