Sterilization of Industrial Process Waters

For industrial water treatment applications, ultraviolet (UV) sterilization is used to inhibit growth of microorganisms, remove ozone, chlorine and trace organics and reduce total organic carbon (TOC).  The water to be “sterilized” is exposed to UV radiation in specially designed chambers that provide intimate contact of the water with the UV light source.

Bacteria and other living organisms absorb the energy, which destroys or inactivates their DNA, thus preventing the bacteria from reproducing. Similarly, chemicals and organic compounds also absorb the energy but they are broken down into smaller and more harmless molecules.

Sterilization, sanitization and disinfection are three terms that are commonly used and often misused.  Depending on what industry or profession, these terms may have the same or different meanings.  For the purposes of this page, “sterilization” will refer to the inactivation of microorganisms, ozone, chlorine and TOC removal.

In industrial water treatment applications, UV sterilization is used as a pretreatment and/or post treatment step for high-purity water processes.  This can include water for manufacturing semi conductors, circuit boards, LCD and CRT displays, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and even non-water applications such as liquid sugars.

Siemens Water Technologies manufactures and distributes UV systems with capacities from 0.5 to over 5,000 gpm (0.1 to over 1,100 m3/hr).  A wide range of lamp technologies and reactor designs are available to meet your most rigorous demands in virtually any industrial water application.

Semiconductor Fab Looks to Siemens for Solutions

This semiconductor fab was challenged with a tight budget and an accelerated project schedule to meet production needs. The original bid for this job included a new UPW system with turnkey services, however the final project required Siemens Water Technologies to utilize existing equipment supplied in a building that was being shut down.  The challenge was to reinstall this equipment at another site with a very tight turn around.
