ZABOCS Solves Odor Problem in Jacksonville Beach, FL

Challenge

Pump station #10 is located in the resort community of Jacksonville Beach on the Atlantic coast of Florida.  Situated between picturesque neighborhoods and outdoor sports facilities, odors resulting from the station’s wetwell and adjacent manhole were resulting in numerous complaints.  The city along with the engineering firm Waitz & Moye determined they required a low maintenance odor control system capable of treating both the manhole and wetwell while not disturbing the surrounding community.

Solution

Engineers recommended the The Siemens Water Technologies ZABOCS 5000 Biological Odor Control System as the most appropriate technology for pump station # 10.  In contrast to chemical scrubbers, the ZABOCS is a low maintenance alternative requiring only water and nutrients for operation.  High system efficiency allows for the use of small fans at high airflow rates, thereby creating minimal noise.  This coupled with no chemical storage tanks or containment structures made the ZABOCS the most unobtrusive option for the Jacksonville Beach project.

Results

Prepackaged and skid mounted, the ZABOCS has proven to be the best option for the Jacksonville project.  Treating 350 cfm of air up to 150 ppm H2S, the system ventilates foul air from both sources without disturbing the community with the operation of noisy chemical pumps used in alternative technologies.

Low system profile and limited operating noise have allowed the people of Jacksonville Beach to enjoy the serenity of the community without offensive odors.
