ZABOCS™: An Innovative Way To Remove Odors Biologically

Challenge

Biological odor control typically means

  • Large, space-consuming systems
  • Long acclimation periods
  • Messy media replacement

H2S emissions at a wet well in Collier County, Florida measured up to 80 ppm.  Collier County was in need of the next generation of biological odor control.

Solution

A superior biological odor control system was required to treat wet wells in Collier County, Florida.  ZABOCS captures and eliminates organic and inorganic odors by combining:

  • Gas absorption
  • Gas adsorption
  • Biological oxidation

ZABOCS is different than other systems:

  • Compact footprint
  • Long media life
  • No odors emitted upon start-up
  • Treats three times the air volume of similar-sized systems

First Stage – Proprietary Media

  • Inert, inorganic biofilter medium
  • Well suited to treat for hydrogen sulfide
  • Developed in Europe by Veolia Water Systems

Second Stage - Proprietary Carbon Media

  • Carbon-based medium
  • Supports biological growth
  • Formulated by USFilter’s Westates Products

Results

ZABOCS was Tested in Collier County, Florida

  • Test conducted by Camp Dresser & McKee
  • Test period: Nov. 2001 - February 2002
  • Wet well with 350 CFM, 80 PPM H2S treated

Exceptional Results - ZABOCS achieved over 95 percent odor removal

Overall, the ZABOCS had the highest level of H2S removal and odor removal, while also treating the highest inlet concentration of all the systems studied.

Collier County Wastewater has since purchased numerous ZABOCS units for installation in Florida.
