Anaerobic Digestion

The anaerobic digestion process is one of the most important sludge management practices used for sludge stabilization in wastewater treatment. Anaerobic digestion is the most widely used stabilization process in larger treatment plants with average flows greater than 5 MGD.

Dystor Gas Holding System in a Retrofit Applicaiton, Anaerobic Digestion

The anaerobic digestion process operates in the absence of oxygen to transform some organic material in the sludge to gases such as methane and carbon dioxide. A reduction of the quantity of solids and pathogenic organisms is also achieved. Several advantages of anaerobic digestion are the generation of methane gas as a source of usable energy, up to 60% destruction of volatile solids and produces a stable Class B product suitable for agricultural use.

Siemens is known for its capability to provide a full scope of anaerobic digestion process equipment, in addition to design and system sizing expertise.  Product offerings include hydraulic and confined gas mixing systems, heaters and heat exchangers, steel floating covers, steel gasholder covers, steel fixed covers, turnkey provision of dual membrane gas storage systems, and gas handling and safety equipment.

Anaerobic Digestion Case Study: Dystor® Installation Increases Gas Storage Capacity, Resulting in Significant Cost Savings for the City of Eau Claire, WI

The Eau Claire, WI. facility’s secondary digester cover failed to provide adequate gas storage to allow use of the facility’s cogeneration facility for the five years since it had been installed.

The city requested Siemens Water Technologies remove and replace the existing ballasted fiberglass cover with a Dystor® membrane gas holder system. The solution also needed to provide 120 days of sludge storage due to the limited access to farmland for application of sludge during winter months.
