Biological Wastewater Treatment

Biological treatment is a more natural wastewater treatment process than other wastewater treatment methods. Microorganisms feed on the complex materials present in the wastewater and turn them into simpler substances, preparing the water for further treatment.

The point of this process is to reduce the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level. There are a variety of technologies that can perform biological wastewater treatment. Mechanical aerators, air diffusers, MBRs, SBRs, trickling filters, and more are a part of this process, depending on the facility. As technology advances, these systems are becoming more convenient, such as being redesigned with smaller footprints. Biological wastewater treatment also cuts costs because there isn't a great amount of energy that is needed for the process to be performed, thanks to the hard-working organisms.

MBR Technology from Siemens Helps the 2008 Games Go “Green”

As part of its preparation for the 2008 games, the city of Beijing, China wanted to adopt eco-friendly transportation, power generation and water management technologies. One of their goals was to use biological wastewater treatment to process 90% of the city’s wastewater and re-use 50% of the treated effluent.
