Membranes for Reuse:  Industrial Applications Using Microfiltration as RO Pretreatment

As water shortage problems become more widespread, with traditional water supplies either dwindling in supply and/or quality and water costs increasing, communities and business alike are seeking alternative, sustainable water sources to meet their increasing needs.   New water is not easily created, but municipalities and industries are doing just that, by turning to advanced water treatment processes that efficiently and safely treat wastewater and produce a high quality product water.

The primary use for reclaimed water has been for irrigation, but increasing interest in reclaimed water for industrial applications has spurred interest in advanced water treatment processes based on microporous membranes.  Advanced wastewater treatment processes incorporating reverse osmosis (RO) are becoming more common partly due to the trend towards using microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) pretreatment.  The use of these low pressure membranes as pretreatment to a RO system has resulted in integrated membrane systems that have become more reliable, economical and easier to operate and maintain than earlier systems with conventional pretreatment.
