Wastewater Treatment – High Strength Residual Reduction
High strength residuals are often found in wastewater and usually resist treatment by conventional processes. Their resistance to conventional processes makes them require specialized technologies or services.

These high strength contaminants are common in petroleum refineries, chemical plants including ethylene manufacturers, pharmaceutical producers, pesticide plants, and metal plating operations.

Siemens has expertise and specialized technologies and services to help customers deal with these types of wastes. Our wet air oxidation and hydrothermal technologies are specifically designed to treat high strength residuals, rendering them safe for disposal or for post-treatment by conventional means.

 Zimpro® Wet Air Oxidation

We offer a variety of the processes and products to treat high strength wastes, and provide collection, transport, treatment, and recovery services to waste producers at our centralized waste treatment centers.

Case Study: ATOFINA Italia Uses Zimpro® Wet Air Oxidation to Treat MMA Waste Stream

ATOFINA Italia's methyl methacrylate production facility in Rho, Italy, needed to treat blow down from an ammonium sulfate crystallizer.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is the most important ester of methacrylic acid. It can be homo- and copolymerised to produce acrylic resins with good strength, transparency and with excellent weather resistance. Acetone cyanohydrin was the first commercial process for making MMA, and is the predominant process used today.

However, acetone cyanohydrin generates by-products due to the strength of the acid and high temperature steps in the process. Ammonium hydrogensulphate is an unavoidable by-product of the reaction.
