Gas Scrubbing - Wet Scrubbing

Wet scrubbing is a gas scrubbing method in which contaminants are removed from the gas stream by means of using a scrubbing liquid. Wet Scrubbing is used in industrial settings such as acid plants, fertilizer plants, steel mills, asphalt plants, and large power plants and is very effective in controlling odors and preventing the emission of potentially hazardous gases.

The accumulation, transport and processing of sewage results in the generation of off gases that must be controlled and treated. These organic gases vary in make-up and concentration. Within a large metropolitan wastewater treatment (sewer) system, the chemistry and concentration of these undesirable gases will also vary within the hours of a given day. The community and surrounding areas must be protected from the toxic gases and offensive odors that are generated. The packed tower is possibly the world’s most popular solution to this problem. Packed towers are also used to scrub acid gases and react with other undesirable emissions that come from a variety of industries.

The process that these structured scrubbers go through in order to remove contaminants from the contaminated gas stream is as follows:  The gas stream passes through a packed structure with a large wetted surface area. The wetted area enables close contact between the gas and the scrubbing liquor, or scrubbing chemicals, which in turn allows the scrubbing liquor to react with the pollutants in the gas stream, removing them.

We have designed and built more than 100 packed tower scrubber systems, ranging in size from 1,000 to 67,000 CFM, and from single packed towers to facilities housing 38 packed towers arranged in parallel trains. These features allow for a larger rate of pollutant removal in less time.

In addition to the preferred packed tower scrubber system, Siemens supplies a wide range of odor control systems, which include:

  • Biofiltration Systems
  • Chemical Induction Systems
  • Hybrid Odor Control Systems
  • Vapor Odor Control Systems
  • Degasifier/ Air Stripper Systems

Case Study:
Los Angeles Looks to Next Generation of Odor Control Equipment

Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant is located next to the Los Angeles International Airport in a densely populated urban environment. Throughout the 1980’s, the City used conventional packed tower systems and activated carbon adsorbers to treat odors. Plant operations generated odors resulting in more than 60 individual scrubbing units across the plant, each varying in size and design.
