Besides attention to sustainability and our drinking water supply, wastewater and biosolids management (sludge minimization) also needs attention. Effective and proper management of biosolids can provide a reusable byproduct, and can drastically reduce capital and operating costs associated with biosolids handling.
Siemens Water Technologies offers a wide range of solutions from dewatering and drying technology to complete biosolids reduction processes. For example, the new Crown™ Disintegration Process helps municipalities convert waste to energy (WtE) by enhancing its Anaerobic Digestion with this cell lysing process. The process, installed after the sludge is thickened, but before the digester, increases methane gas production by up to 30 percent, and reduces solids for disposal by around 20 percent. The Dystor® Digester cover and Heater/Heat Exchanger by Envirex® are combined with the Anaerobic Digestion and Crown technology to support the overall WtE process. Plus, we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Along with a multitude of sludge dewatering options, we also provide Sludge Belt Dryers to complement your biosolids management program. The new Siemens convective belt dryer is offered in a one or two-belt and offers low emissions, low dust, a granular final product, and a low thermal requirement with possible heat recovery from low temperature waste energy sources.
By making better use of wastewater solids and waste heat, communities are lowering their energy costs, helping to save space in landfills and encouraging the recycling of nutrient-rich wastewater solids.
Water Reuse Helps Reduce the Demand on Potable Water Worldwide
Municipalities are recycling and reusing treated wastewater to better manage water supplies in the face of decreasing resources. With water reuse installations worldwide, Siemens Water Technologies has faced the strictest limits and met the tightest industry standards. Name your challenge, from the most contaminated wastewater effluent, to the purest end product. Chances are we’ve been there and done that. Let us help you analyze your particular wastewater situation and desired recycled water quality requirements to find the solution that makes sense for your needs.
Siemens’ water reuse and recycling solutions includes wastewater treatment technologies from physical, chemical and biological treatment, to membrane filtration. Our MEMCOR® membrane filtration, as well as the Trident® clarifier, Hydro-Clear® sand filter and the newly enhanced Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) with pulsed airlift, are just a few of the technologies we offer. Another popular filtration technology for water reuse applications is the Forty-X Disc filter. To ensure effluent quality, these technologies can be combined with Siemens’ ultraviolet disinfection for a multi-barrier approach.
Biological and Clarification Solutions Increase Wastewater Treatment Plant Efficiency
With so many different biological and solid-liquid separation technologies to choose from, how do you know you are getting the most effective and most economical solution for your application? Siemens’ process engineers work with a municipality’s consulting engineer to evaluate effluent requirements, land availability and site-specific factors such as energy use, labor costs and sludge disposal needs. The result is a treatment system that serves the owners’ specific requirements with a real value provided. This new program from Siemens is called BioFlowsheet+SM Solutions and is intended to provide consultants and owners with a single point of contact for multiple products that are integrated and optimized into a single solution. The coordination of our support and services begins with the design evaluation stage and continues through start-up and long-term operation.
Bioflowsheet+ Solutions have been implemented at wastewater treatment plants worldwide to reduce costs and improve energy efficiency, while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Siemens offers innovative technologies to meet all wastewater treatment applications. These include the Orbal® and VLR® (Vertical Loop Reactor) aeration systems, VertiCel®, OMNIFLO® SBR and MBR processes, as well as High-Performance Circular Clarification and the unique Cannibal® solids reduction process.
Turblex, a newly acquired Siemens business, provides integrated aeration solutions designed to address your specific needs. By taking all the ancillary equipment and control systems into account, we can help pave the way to major power savings and a significant boost to operating efficiency and effectiveness.
Drives and Instrumentation Reduce Resource Consumption
Siemens delivers an integrated approach that can improve virtually every water and wastewater process. Our drives, instrumentation, controls, SCADA and operator stations – with measurement and control data transmitted from the central control desk to management’s desktop -- deliver the critical information needed to ensure operational efficiencies at your facility.
Industry accounts for 40 percent of all power consumption, and electric drives play a key role. They account for two-thirds of this consumption, offering a huge opportunity to not only reduce costs in a time of rising energy prices, but to make a positive impact on the environment. An energy-optimized drive system makes a sustained contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.
Siemens’ innovations and leadership in energy efficient drives and instrumentation help reduce overall energy consumption, measure and reduce emissions and comply with local, national and global environmental standards.
