Challenge
In April 2006, Siemens Water Technologies was contacted by the Bucks County Water Authority in Solebury, PA to provide assistance in treating arsenic contaminated drinking water. New federal drinking water standards required a reduction of the arsenic level to 5 ppb. With less than 4 months to comply, the water authority needed a temporary solution to meet the new regulation and avoid formal notification of the violation to their current customers.
Solution
Siemens Water Technologies supplied a temporary treatment system while the permanent solution was engineered, designed and fabricated. The temporary system consisted of 48" diameter steel vessels containing 43 cu. ft of Siemens GFH® granular ferric hydroxide media. The larger permanent design provided two (2) 60" diameter vessels and 53 cu. ft. of GFH® media for long term treatment of the arsenic contaminant.
Results
Siemens has the flexibility to provide both short term and long term, permanent installations for arsenic treatment. The short lead times and service options that Siemens offered enabled this customer to meet the new regulation within the allotted timeframe and avoid the need for violation communication to it's customers. Further, Siemens ability to provide both the temporary and permanent system simplified the process for this customer since they did not have to work with multiple suppliers.
