Zimpro Systems - Materials of Construction Testing

Proper selection of materials of construction is critical in developing the design for a full-scale wet oxidation system. Optimal materials of construction selection is made by testing a variety of alloys in the specific waste stream under appropriate conditions.

Using techniques perfected in our Rothschild, Wis., office over the past 30 years, materials tests are performed at "worst case scenario" conditions. We use the actual waste under the harshest anticipated reaction conditions.

Other tests are performed using milder conditions to determine proper alloys for less severe conditions in the system.

Materials of construction experiments are performed by placing metal coupons in an autoclave reactor partially filled with wastewater, and operated continuously for an extended period of time. The coupons are designed to provide corrosion information on materials with zones of:

  • flat, unstrained material
  • non-annealed autogenous welds
  • plastically-strained material
  • crevices
  • sharp edges.

Corrosion coupons are examined in-house by our staff of materials specialists following ASTM methods and advanced optical equipment to determine:

  • general corrosion rate
  • crevice corrosion
  • localized corrosion (pitting)
  • stress corrosion (cracking).

We will report these results and recommend optional materials for the application.
