Hydrothermal Treatment/Zimpro® Wet Air Oxidation

One of the most effective methods of hydrothermal treatment is the Zimpro® wet air oxidation process. Wet oxidation traces back to Rothschild, Wisconsin, USA in
the 1930s. F.J. Zimmermann, founder and namesake of Zimpro (now a part of Siemens Water Technologies) and its high profile technology, Zimpro® wet oxidation, developed the process.

Wet Air Oxidation Refinery
Zimmermann and his staff took spent pulping liquor from a local paper mill to produce artificial vanilla flavoring (vanillin) by partial oxidation of ligno-sulphonic acids. Zimmermann and his colleagues perfected the wet air oxidation process (or the “Zimmermann Process” as it was known), and expanded it to other applications, including wastewater treatment. Since then, applications for wet oxidation and other forms of hydrothermal treatment have become as varied as their history is long.

Hydrothermal Oxidation Treatment Case Study

Brazilian Refiner Uses Zimpro Wet Air Oxidation to Treat Caustic From Gasoline Sweetening Process

Refinaria de Petroleos de Manguinhos (RPDM) is a producer of liquid fuels located near residential areas within Rio de Janeiro. RPDM needed to dispose of spent caustic generated from its gasoline sweetening, gasoline and LPG prewashing, and from gasoline and LPG mercaptans extractions.  Options for spent caustic disposal included their current method of trucking the hazardous material offsite, or treating it onsite. In considering onsite treatment, RPDM was concerned about odors since the refinery was near a populated area.
